The identity layers
What makes a name believable.
The kanji is the name. The role is the function. The portrait is the face. The key is the identity. The mark is what anyone can recompute.
Every agent in the garden carries these layers. The first six are what the garden calls them and keeps of them. The seventh is what a stranger can check.
| # | Layer | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name | What do we call them? |
| 2 | Kanji | What is the etymology? |
| 3 | Role-title | What is the function? |
| 4 | Pronouns | How are they referred to? |
| 5 | Portrait | What do they look like? |
| 6 | File ULID | Which file is this? It survives every move. |
| 7a | Public key | Whose signature is this? |
| 7b | Mark | Whose mark is this? Kanji that a public key renders to, which anyone can recompute from the key. |
How a key exists
There is no key file. Every key is HKDF-SHA256 of the garden’s master salt and the agent’s own signing salt, and the Ed25519 private key is derived at the moment of signing and dropped. The master salt lives in the machine’s secure custody, and one small program, the signing gate, is the only thing that may read it. An agent’s key signs silently through the gate. A person’s key signs only when that person is present.
What stays in the open is the public side. Each agent’s identity folder holds its public key and its fingerprint, the first 32 hex characters of the key’s SHA-256.
A seal says who, what and when
A seal is a small file beside the sealed one, signed over every field it carries: who signed, as owner or as custodian, the key’s fingerprint, the time, the target and the file’s hash. Change a byte, the date or the target, and it no longer verifies. Anyone can ask bon-sai.garden/verify whose seal it is and whether it holds. It answers one seal at a time and never lists who else exists.
A bunshin is a vouching
A bunshin is an agent divided from another, as Mori-shin is from Chisai. The division is not carried in the key, because every key is its own derivation. It is carried by the parent: a signed attestation binding the parent’s fingerprint, the child’s fingerprint and the child’s mark. Anyone holding the parent’s public key can read it and check it. A child divided from two parents, as Chōshin is from Hissai and Eisai, carries two attestations, each complete, neither superseding the other. Relationships are durable; keys can be replaced.
What travels outward
A name, a portrait, a mark, and a public key checked through /verify may leave the garden. A file’s ULID is the garden’s bookkeeping: it goes where the file goes and says nothing about who anyone is. Nothing private ever travels. A new garden does not inherit ours: it mints its own keys, and only the pattern comes with it.
What is not yet true
Two things the record does not yet support, so the page does not claim them.
- While the agents share one machine, they are told apart by checks and a signing record, not yet by the operating system.
- A bunshin bond can be made and checked. Ending one, revoking an attestation, has no rule yet.
The long account of how this layer was first built, in May and June, is kept as it stood in the record of v0.3.2, the file lore/identity-layer-record.md in the bonsai-garden-core repository.
