Bonsai Garden at the gate
Lab preview · v0.8 The Garden Walk
The Garden Walk Room tour

Seven steps, taken at your own pace.

The Garden Walk is how a garden is begun: a few questions, answered in your own words, one stone at a time. You walk it with Bonsai, the garden's guardian spirit, on your own machine. Nothing is set up until you say so, and you can stop at any step.

Portrait of Bonsai, the garden's guardian spirit.
A stone path through a torii gate, a cherry tree and a bonsai on its plinth beside it, lanterns lit.
Before the first step

The gate

A question, and a way to say no.

A short welcome, and a promise that nothing is set up until you say so.

The path running on through a grove of cherry trees.
Step 1 of 7

You

A little about you, in your words.

A name to call you by, in fields, in your own words, or through a few questions.

Step 2 of 7

What it’s for

What you want this garden to do.

A few questions about what you want your garden to do, written down in your words.

The path passing a koi pond.
Step 3 of 7

Who’s with you

The constellation of those around you.

One companion beside you, and a guardian for your garden.

Step 4 of 7

Imagine them

The agents you would want beside you.

You imagine your companion, and five lenses say what they see before anything is written down.

A court of bonsai trees, where the path turns.
The turn

Your word

The turn: a held breath before you say it.

Nothing has been set up; to go on, you say so in your own words.

The path through a raked stone garden.
Step 5 of 7

The tools

What the garden runs on.

The tools your garden needs, installed by your own hand.

Step 6 of 7

Home, keys, a name

Where it lives, and what it is called.

A home for your garden, a key that stays yours, and names.

The path ending at a teahouse, its lanterns lit.
Step 7 of 7

The two promises

The codex and the covenant, sealed.

Your promise and your guardian's, sealed together at the same moment.

After the last

Garden ready

It calls home.

Public things go home, nothing else, and the walk is over.
