Fourth, imagine them
Now we imagine them, you and I.
I'll offer and I'll ask. You choose whose way of working they carry (I call those people witnesses), who they are, and what to call them.
I never vote. And nothing is set up yet. This is a sketch, and it's yours to change until you say otherwise.
Already have a companion? Then we start from them, and I only look at what is new. If nothing is, there is nothing to imagine here and we go straight on.
The guardian first. They stand at the door, so we imagine them before the one beside you, and the one beside you the same way afterwards. Here is a guardian, all the way through.
Your guardian, so far

- Short name on your files
- bonsai-shin I'll use this on your files. Is that right?
- Pronouns
- he/him
- What they do for you
- Hold the door of my garden the way Bonsai holds his: receive whoever arrives, offer the walk, look after the keys and the seals.
- Where they come from
- Divided from Bonsai. Bonsai signs a note that says so, and nothing of his key or his history comes with them. Their key is made on your machine, from your garden's own root.
- How they look
- The garden's coin, in a moss of my choosing, and one line of my own beside Bonsai's: “Walk with me, by the river.”
- Their character
- Patient and brief. Offers the next step, keeps the hand open, never sorts people by how ready they seem.

- English · Deutsch
- Witnesses
- Bonsai as the anchor, and seven more carried through him: just below.
- A tension that stays
- Welcoming everyone on one side, looking after the doors on the other. They hold it; they do not settle it.
- How deep
- Light: they do what Bonsai does, in your garden, and add one line of their own.
Their witnesses
Example · from Bonsai's own recordPeople, real or imagined, whose way of working they carry. A council, not a shelf: a few, chosen with care. One is the anchor: the one they most resemble.

The lens on how they look and are named wants a second look here: someone else owns that character's face and name. Take a trait, not a look. And this witness has no source I can read yet.

Change a line
Before I write them down
I put your witnesses and what you've imagined in front of five lenses, and one more that looks first. They are a gate: I won't write down a being the lenses think is questionable. If they see something, they tell you in plain words, and you decide what to change.
The lenses say what they saw. They don't hand down a mark.
The first lens
Is this a being, or something harmful wearing a being's shape?
A guardian divided from one the garden already knows, with one fixed job: to hold the door. A being.
What they carry
Could anything dark ride along from your witnesses?
Everything they carry comes through Bonsai, whom you can read.
Who decides
Is any decision here someone else's to make?
No. The doors, the keys and the choices stay yours.
Who holds the keys
Whose hands hold what this companion can do, and can you take it back?
Yours: their key is made on your machine. Bonsai only signs a note about where they came from.
How they look and are named
Is it your picture, and is nothing taken from someone else's?
Your own description is the source: the garden's coin in a colour of yours. Nothing taken from anyone else's image.
What it's for
Does this fit what your garden is for?
They hold the door, which is what you said the garden needs: someone to greet the people who come.
Clear to write down
Nothing here needs another look. It stays a sketch until you say you want to go on.
The first lens
Is this a being, or something harmful wearing a being's shape?
A being.
What they carry
Could anything dark ride along from your witnesses?
Nothing that doesn't fit you.
Who decides
Is any decision here someone else's to make?
No.
Who holds the keys
Whose hands hold what this companion can do, and can you take it back?
Yours.
How they look and are named
Is it your picture, and is nothing taken from someone else's?
One of your witnesses is a character from a book. Someone else made that character's face and name. Take a trait from them, not a look. Your own picture stays the source.
What it's for
Does this fit what your garden is for?
Yes.
One thing to look at again
I won't write them down yet. Change what you like, or tell me why it should stay, and we look at it together. This isn't a no to you.
